Adjust Bio-Gide® to the defect size and shape
After assessing the defect size and shape, trim Bio-Gide® to the appropriate configuration prior to placing into the defect.

Apply dry and moisten once in place
Bio-Gide® is brought to the defect site dry and then moistened with saline or the patient’s blood. The rough side faces the bony defect. Bio-Gide® must always be used in conjunction with an underlying bone graft or bone graft substitute, i.e. Bio-Oss® or Bio-Oss Collagen®.

Fix or stabilize as necessary
Bio-Gide®’s significant hydrophilic properties allow it to adhere well to the underlying graft and surrounding bony walls. Generally, no additional fixation is required. For very large defects, using the “double-layer” technique leads to increased stability. If appropriate, pins, tacks or sutures can be used for additional stabilization.

Primary closure when possible
Whenever possible, primary soft tissue closure, without tension, should be achieved. However, in cases where primary closure is difficult or impossible, healing over an exposed Bio-Gide® membrane is possible. Soft tissue healing usually occurs within a few weeks over the exposed Bio-Gide® membrane. When primary closure is not achieved, placing the patient on an appropriate antimicrobial rinse, i.e. chlorhexidine, is indicated (Valentini P., Dentale Implantologie, 2003).
