The Winning Combination for Sinus Augmentation Procedures
Bone atrophy secondary to sinus pneumatization or alveolar ridge atrophy following tooth removal is a common finding in the posterior maxilla. In today’s clinical practice, placement of maxillary posterior endosseous implants has become standard-of-care treatment, driven in part by a highly informed and demanding patient population. As a consequence, the need for maxillary sinus augmentation has increased dramatically over the last decade.
Successful grafting of the posterior maxilla demands a high level of surgical expertise combined with the utilization of evidence based decision making. There are several choices a surgeon must make that can collectively influence the clinical outcome of the procedure. A review of the published literature indicates that the highest implant survival rates can be achieved in a sinus augmentation procedure if the clinician uses an effective particulate xenograft rather than any form or autologous or composite graft and places a barrier membrane over the lateral window.
Bio-Oss® natural bone grafting material is identified as a highly osteoconductive xenograft that is capable of resisting to sinus graft “slumping” and able to sustain increasing bone regeneration over time. The efficacy of Bio-Oss® is likely attributed to its slow resorption profile which provides a long-term scaffold upon which regeneration occurs. In addition, slowly resorbing Bio-Oss® particles do not interfere with osseointegration leading to the highest predictability and implant survival rates.1-6
Bio-Gide® resorbable collagen membrane can further enhance results in maxillary sinus augmentation procedures when placed over the lateral window osteotomy. Controlled trials have demonstrated that the addition of a barrier membrane results in better corticalization of the graft surface, increased vascularity of the maturing graft and higher implant survival rates.1
In the Featured Article that follows, additional evidence is provided to further support that Bio-Oss® and Bio-Gide® are a winning combination when deciding how to approach maxillary sinus augmentation procedures.
