Site Preservation - Patient Acceptance

How do I Increase Patient Acceptance of  Site Preservation Procedures?
You have all the facts and understand the value of site preservation.  How do you use this information to convince your patients that the added expense for site preservation is a wise, long-term investment?  Whether patients are planning for a future implant or want to preserve the anatomy of their jawbone and esthetic appearance under a bridge, there are compelling reasons to undergo a site preservation procedure.

Here are some tips to assist you in presenting this treatment option:
  • It is not enough to describe the benefits verbally to most patients.  The use of “patient-friendly” visual aids is highly recommended.  Models, color illustrations and electronic media provide some highly effective tools that can help to clearly communicate your reasons for recommending this treatment.  Your dental product representatives can be valuable resources as they most likely have an abundance of patient education materials that they can typically provide to you at no cost.
  • Present the risks involved in foregoing the site preservation procedure, including poor esthetic outcomes, challenges in implant placement, etc.
  • Take the time to fully provide realistic expectations and answer any questions the patient may have.
  • Make sure that your staff is well educated regarding the rationale for site preservation procedures so that they can also answer patient questions.  Patients will often turn to the hygienist or other staff for reassurance or help in making a decision.  Your staff can play a critical role in increasing a patient’s comfort level in your office.
  • Whether your patient decides to undergo treatment or not, they will certainly appreciate the time you spend with them planning for their care.
